Namestitev XASTIR

Xastir is an APRS client program that uses amateur radio and Internet services to convey GPS mapping, weather, and positional data in a graphical application. It has been developed by and for amateur radio enthusiasts to provide real-time data in an easy to use package.

Xastir is an open-source project: Most sources, documentation, and binaries are available under the GPL license, with a few modules available under other open-source or public domain licenses.

Debian installation

Xastir comes as a Debian package - under Woody distribution version 1.0.0-2 is available.

You can install it as any other Debian packet. Unfortunately provided version does not support maps in GIF and JPG formats. Version 1.1.3 has this support included. It also provides script for automatic map description file (.geo) generation from UI-View .inf files.

To install this version on Debian system (Woody) following steps are recommended:

1. Upgrade to Woody which is current (20. 10. 2002) stable release of Debian.
2. Install following packages using dselect:
   • lesstif1,
   • lesstif-dev,
   • libc6,
   • xlibs,
   • xlibs-dev,
   • imagemagick,
   • libmagick5,
   • libmagick5-dev,
   • festival (for sound support),
   • festival-dev (for sound support),
   • wget.
3. Get the latest version of Xastir or local copy of the version 1.1.3.
4. Untar the package (example: tar xfz xastir113-2002-aug-15.tgz).
5. Change directory to newly created directory xastir ("cd xastir").
6. Configure the package with "./configure --prefix=/usr/local/xastir --with-motif-includes=/usr/include".
7. Compile the package with "make".
8. Install the package with "make install".
9. Add "/usr/local/xastir/bin" to your PATH variable.

Now you are ready to run the xastir.

I have prepared some S5 maps to be used by Xastir. Most of the maps were found on http://ropotulja.saop.si/.
